Boxing Day: Food, Family, and Sightseeing

There are two things Italian treasure the most: Family and Food! And we love to gather around the fireplace during the Christmas Holidays to chit-chat, snack, and be merry. If it wasn't clear enough from my previous posts, I absolutely adore Christmas! For us, Christmas is a three-day affair: we start with a fish dinner on the 24th, followed by a super lunch on the 25th, and finally another big lunch on the 26th. As there is a lot of cooking involved, we usually split the chores. This year, however, my parents hosted all three meals. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun too.

The 26th was a smaller affair. We took some pictures and ate and talked a lot. Emilia was very good and napped exactly when we were having lunch, which meant we could all enjoy a nice meal in peace (no offence, baby!).

When she woke up, she drank her milk and then she was full of energy and enjoyed walking up and down the stairs, one of her new favourite pastimes.

And since we all exchanged gifts on the 25th, lunch was much shorter. So, Beatrice, Rob, and I took the chance to do some local sightseeing. We visited a lovely Medieval town just thirty minutes away from my parents' house, Città S. Angelo. We had a very nice time wandering around and look at that sky, isn't it gorgeous?!

And guess what we did as soon as we got back home?! Yes, eat more!

I am Italian, and I love pasta!

When it comes to food, there is nothing that Emilia doesn't really like, however, she is developing a proper passion for pasta. Inspired by my friend Eleonora, today I cooked pasta (stelline) and broccoli for Emilia and she absolutely loved it. I made a big portion thinking that I could eat some myself too...but I was totally wrong. Emilia devoured the whole thing and even picked the bits that fell into her bib. Nothing goes to waste in this house. God bless you, my little baby!

Anniversary Celebrations

So we have come to the end of our two-day anniversary celebrations.

Day 1 started with a nice homemade breakfast and ended with an evening out in Theatreland, in the West End. It's not that easy to dress up with an expanding bump, but I tried to wear something nice for the occasion anyway.

It's not proper Summer weather in London at the moment but the temperatures are just perfect for me, not too high and definitely not low either. It's nice not to wear a jacket but at the same time it's great not to be sweating all the time.
As you can see, the bump is regularly growing. I am at the end of week 31 now, only nine weeks to go (or less!). I am getting every day slower and slower but I can't complain, things are still going pretty smooth.

At 6.30pm our car arrived and we were driven to the Royal Drury Lane Theatre to see Shrek The Musical.

Unfortunately, the musical wasn't great. I don't think I disliked it as much as Rob but I was certainly disappointed. The good things about the movies are the wittiness and the songs, both these things were taken away in the musical. I don't quite understand why but all the songs were new and specifically written for the musical. Why would you do that when the soundtrack of the movies is so good and entertaining? This is a mystery to me. Anyway, the story is still sweet and we enjoyed an evening out in bustling London. It was crazy busy on a Monday night and it took us forever to get back home, I have never seen so much traffic in London. I wonder how it is going to be in a month time for the Olympics!

Day 2 was perfect. Rob came home from work and surprised me with a colourful bunch of gerberas. Aren't they lovely? I told him he has won the *best husband of the year* prize :)
He has done so much for this anniversary and I am very grateful.

For the evening's dinner Rob picked Gaucho, here at the Tower Bridge. We love this restaurant and their meat is just delicious. I loved this choice for many reasons: it's very close to our flat, the ambiance of the restaurant is very cool and the food is to die for.
Here is a picture of me and the bump a few minutes before leaving the flat.

I really enjoyed the short walk to the restaurant and Gaucho certainly didn't disappoint. We started with non-alcoholic drinks and appetisers; it was so weird to be drinking a non-alcoholic Mojito but let me tell you, it was sooooo good! Rob opted for a *fake* Pina Colada instead.

And then the amazing meat, all the iron I needed for the day.

We ended the meal with a super yummy dessert: I had the best white chocolate and yogurt mousse I have ever had with a nice and refreshing mango and coconut sauce. I didn't even have the time to take a picture, I just ate it and loved it!

So this is it, our first wedding anniversary has come to an end. I had a great time. One year down, the rest of our lives to go...

Wahaca and shopping

Yesterday Rob and I went to Westfield in Stratford to do some shopping. Around 11.15am we left the house with a list of things to buy and were on a mission to buy as many items on the list as possible. Yes, you guessed it right, mostly baby stuff, she is sucking all our energy and money already!

Going to a mall is not what I would call one of our favourite pastimes, in fact, we rather hate it; however, it is convenient to shop in a place with lots of stores condensed in the same area. So, we went. Before getting wild shopping we checked The Street, the outdoor area where all the nice restaurants are, and after wandering a little we opted for Wahaca. We both fancied some good Mexican food and I had heard from friends that this was a nice place. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing, very cool, colourful and vibrant. It resembles the style of a Mexican market, where you can eat reasonably priced, fresh and tasty food.

It was our first time so everything on the menu sounded delicious. We finally opted to share black beans and cheese quesadillas and marinated chicken taquitos; we then each ordered chicken burritos. To drink, a deliciously fresh Citrus Frizz, with lime, mint and sparkling water. Everything was absolutely tasty. We definitely recommend this place and we will be back ourselves!

Shopping with a full stomach is much easier. We weren't able to cross everything off the list but we bought some essentials, such as Avent binkis (it took us forever to choose what we thought may be the right ones...honestly, this is hard!),  nightgowns for the hospital, maternity nursing bras and a couple of big dresses for me (still not maternity, I try to avoid those!), some baby clothes and of course Sophie La Girafe, so highly recommended! Rob enjoyed some good shopping for himself too, mostly toiletries and underwear, but at least it wasn't just a day out for the girls!

We got home around 5.30pm and I was literally exhausted. I am not used to being out for so long anymore and everything tires me out. Unfortunately, I even had to take a paracetamol as I developed a bad headache. Thank God I am working from home this week!

How to organise your meals

This is a post I have been meaning to write for quite some time. I am a rather organised person in general but when it comes to organise lunch/dinner meals, according to my friends, I am just too good. I am not sure if this is true or they are simply kidding me, and with *good* they actually mean *a freak*, but I figured I could share here some of my top tips that you may find useful to plan a balanced and varied diet.

Being Italian, I grew up with a strong culinary culture. There are lots of negative things you may want to say about Italians but one thing for sure is that we do know how and what to eat. I am so glad my mum never fed me with pre-packaged, processed and frozen food, and I will do everything I can to do the same with this little baby who is growing inside me. Italians can organise a meal in no time, this is a talent I gave it for granted before I moved to the UK but then I realised that not everyone knows how to use the few ingredients they have in their kitchen to make a last-minute dinner. So, here are some of my tips:

1. Plan your weekly meals
Among my friends I am known (and teased!) for my to-do-lists and short-to-long term plans. I make lists for pretty much everything and I organise my life around these lists, and of course I make what-to-eat lists. At first I used white paper from a notebook but then I discovered this amazing What To Eat notepad from Anthropologie and got hooked. If they make a notepad like this, it means that I am not the only weirdo in the world!!

This is what I do. Rob and I usually do our big food shopping on Saturday morning. As soon as I get home I make a list of all the things we have bought and write the expiration date next to each item. According to the expiration dates, I then start planning our weekly meals. I always start with fresh meat and fish and then all the rest. I find it incredibly useful to plan our meals for many reasons but mostly because so I know what I will be cooking at night when I am back from work and I don't have to stare at the fridge looking for inspiration. Also, it helps me decide what to have for lunch: if I plan to have fish or meat for dinner, I will try to have pasta or rice for lunch. It's important to have a balanced diet, you see. And another benefit of lists like this is that you'll avoid to throw away food that goes bad, since you know exactly when everything expires. Useful no? Of course, you may need to stop every now and then during the week for fresh stuff (e.g. bread or vegetables) but it's fun to stop at your local grocery or deli before going back home after an intense day at work.

2. Choose simple meals
I understand that at the end of a full day at work all you want to do is relax and rest on the sofa reading a book or flipping through a magazine. But eating well is important, so make sure to cook a fresh meal every evening, especially if your lunch options are limited (e.g. sandwich or salad sitting at your desk in front of the computer!). The key secret for this is to choose simple meals to cook that do not require a lot of time or attention. You'll probably have some of your favourite quick meals (ours for example is linguine with pesto and cherry tomatoes, quick and easy!) but you will also want to vary your dinners and sometimes try something different. So I suggest introducing something new every other week. Look for a good recipe book, but not one of those complicated French books where you will need hundreds of ingredients for every individual meal. Italian cuisine, for example, is so easy! My absolute favourite recipe book, however, is not Italian, but British, written by the most famous domestic goddess in the UK, Nigella Lawson. I highly recommend her Nigella Express book.
I have tried many of the recipes and they all work. Nigella doesn't use many ingredients and you can achieve nice and sophisticated results in just a few steps.

3. Always have the basic ingredients
Make sure you always have some basic ingredients in the house, should you need to organise a last-minute dinner for your husband's friends or colleagues who are in town. You know what is essential for you, in my house the following things are always around: garlic, onion, extra virgin olive oil, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, parmesan, pesto along with a couple of other things.

4. Enjoy cooking
And last, but not least, make sure cooking and eating your home-cooked meals is a pleasure and not a task. Put your favourite tunes on while you cook, use nice and colourful kitchen accessories and linens to brighten up the room and just enjoy whatever you are cooking!

Joseph Joseph Index Advance Cutting Board

Back in June my wonderful colleagues gave me a set of John Lewis vouchers as a wedding gift. I was waiting to use them to buy something for the new flat and finally, last Saturday I was able to start using them. And one of the things I bought is this super cool "index" cutting board, which had been on my wish list for quite a while.

P.S. I can hear you Gareth, but you know, we all get excited about different things :)

Bermondsey Street Festival

Last Saturday it was Bermondsey Street Festival and the area surrounding the street was all dressed up for the occasion. I have been trying to find a flat in Bermondsey Street since the first moment I discovered it and after seven years of living in London, I still love the atmosphere in this little area of the city. The street feels like a village, it's full of little cafes and interesting restaurants and pubs, deli shops, local boutiques, a sweet park with tennis courts and the cool, bright orange building of the fashion and textile museum. Not to mention the new addition to the block, Bermondsey Square with its independent cinema and Saturday morning local farmers' market. So far, I haven't been able to live right there but I have always been very close and just a few minutes away.

So when we heard that the fifth Bermondsey Street Festival would be happening last Saturday, we knew we had to go. The weather was glorious, sunny and warm all day. The street was full of stalls and performance stages, and the park had become an open air food market. Overall, it was just lovely. We strolled, had a delicious roast and enjoyed a fashion catwalk in the tennis court.

Too bad we had to leave in the early hours of the afternoon as I wasn't feeling very well. And I have been home sick since then...

Machiavelli

Last week I tried Machiavelli for lunch with my friend Lucia and we both loved it. Machiavelli opened just a month ago in Long Acre, very close to my office, and I have been meaning to go since the day it opened. The interiors attracted my attention and I had a feeling that the food would be good too.

The cafe' is on two floors. We were seated downstairs in a lovely off-cream and very relaxing room. The food was simply delicious; we had a trio of bruschette and then we shared a mouth-watering prawn lasagna and a very good squid fregola pasta.

Machiavelli is certainly not a cheap option for lunch but I will definitely go again, perhaps for another girlie catch-up.

Princi {London}

I know this blog is slowly becoming a London-obsessed-blog and I apologise! But London offers so much to talk about that I can't avoid to share all its beauties with you.

Now, this bakery is not new but if you haven't been yet, I strongly recommend a visit!
Princi is a fantstic Italian bakery set in the heart of Soho, London. The food is divine and the venue just perfect! Visit Princi for a snack, lunch or just a coffee, you won't be disappointed!

USA trip

So, Rob and I have just got back from our annual trip to the States and as usual after a holiday, I am here to give you a report and offer some good tips!
Rob is originally from Baltimore, we therefore went there first and spent some good quality time with family and friends. We also had the opportunity to go to NYC for a couple of days and that was very nice.

I had been to New York before but I was really looking forward to this trip since Jen and Trent, two of Rob's best friends, were joining us for a double celebration of Rob and Jen's birthdays.
New York was really good, we did some shopping and ate at some very good resuarants. Among all, the one I was most impressed with is certainly The Spotted Pig, a little lovely place in the heart of Greenwich Village, definitely my cup of tea. The atmosphere there is simply beautiful and the food was really nice. I would recommend *Deviled Eggs*, they were mouth watering. We also tried the famous Del Frisco's, that didn't disappoint, The Coffe Shop and Megu. One interesting thing to tell you about Del Frisco's is that when we got back to our flat in London we found a little hand-written note from the waitress that served us there, thanking us for choosing them and hoping to see us soon. I thought that was super sweet and thoughtful! The waitresses at The Coffe Shop really were beautiful models and the presentation of the various dishes at Megu was superior.
Something else to mention about my culinary experience in NYC is definitely Magnolia bakery, the famous bakery from SATC and the Devil wears Prada. Rob and I bought two lovely cupcakes and slowly enjoyed them in the little park opposite the shop. It was a real treat!

Otherwise, we just walked around admiring the bustle and interesting architecture of the city.

Another highlight of this trip was a visit to St. Michael's, a little town on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Needless to say that I loved it: delicious seafood, small boutiques, cute cafe', fresh ice-cream shops, colourful wodden houses...what's not to like? Next time I want to go and spend at least a night in one of the fabulous inns for a total relax!

All in all it was a very nice trip. Now, it's just very difficult to go back to work...

Pizza East

Following my previous post...if you, like me, live in London and can't really justify to spend a night in the Rough Luxe Hotel, that perhaps is just a couple of tube stops from your own flat, then here is a suggestion for something you can definitely do in London, in fact, you should do it!

I had lunch at Pizza East today and simply loved it! The atmosphere is fantastic, the industrial interiors simply amazing and the food just delicious! Go there for a Sunday brunch or lunch after a quick shopping at the nearby Spitafields Market.

Must try it soon! You' ll love it, I promise!
